Edward Hopper was not a part of any particular artistic movement. However, Nighthawks was painted during world war two. So, I figure maybe I can find paintings from the time period and compare those. This is La Blouse Roumaine by Matisse, done in an obviously different style. The image is more flat in this and less lifelike. You know what is the best word ever? Lumpenproletariat. It means raggedy proletariat, and it's sometimes used as a pejorative in Russia and Estonia and thereabouts. It's a German word. If you don't believe me, look it up on Wikipedia. I put a lot of trust in Wikipedia. Too much. Oh well.

Lumpenproletariat is a pretty great word. I think the Matisse you chose to compare and contrast to Nighthawks is a great choice. What do they both have to do with the World War II do you think?
